Death Waltz Recording Company Founder Spencer Hickman Joins Mondo to Manage the Industry Leading Soundtrack Labels

Austin, TX—September 16, 2014– Mondo is thrilled to announce the acquisition of elite UK soundtrack label Death Waltz Recording Company. Expanding their global reach for stunningly packaged and highly demanded soundtracks, Mondo and Death Waltz will converge to deliver an even greater offering for music aficionados and film fans alike. With over two decades of music industry experience, Death Waltz founder, Spencer Hickman, joins the Mondo team as Label Manager to lead both record labels in partnership with Mondo Creative Director, Justin Ismael.

Mondo’s acquisition will allow both labels to elevate and increase releases in addition to expanding access. Mondo and Death Waltz are building a unified release schedule for 2015 and are excited to showcase their existing projects this weekend at MondoCon in Austin, TX on September 20 and 21 at The Marchesa Hall & Theater.

Beginning with Maniac (1980) and The Beyond, Mondo signaled that it was eager to incorporate their love of art with deserving soundtracks on vinyl. They’ve continued that tradition with some of their biggest releases yet this year for scores like Jurassic Park andGravity, creating jaw-dropping packages from globally recognized artists like Jay Shaw, Jock, Phantom City Creative and Tyler Stout.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Spencer join Mondo,”said Mondo Creative Director Justin Ishmael. “We’ve long been fans of what he’s been doing at Death Waltz and our minds are melting at the possibilities that this partnership will bring.”

The UK-based Death Waltz Recording Company shares an equal passion in its commitment to producing beautifully designed vinyl, working closely alongside legendary composers and directors such as John Carpenter, Richard Kelly, Alan Howarth and Fabio Frizzi to deliver brand new definitive audio re-masters for beloved cult classics like They Live, Godzilla and City of the Living Dead.

“I looked at what we’ve achieved independently and then I started thinking what we can do together. We aim to build a full service record label offering Vinyl, CD & Digital, Our goal is to make Mondo Music the “go-to” label for fans, filmmakers and composers alike,. After 25 years in the music industry, I don’t think I have been as excited as I am with this opportunity,” said Spencer Hickman.

Mondo has an amazing lineup of new vinyl releases and music-related events at MondoCon, a convention to celebrate the creators behind art, film, music and collectibles. The newly announced vinyl for the original score from Shaun of the Dead will be available for the first time in any format to celebrate the rom-zom-com’s 10th anniversary. Mondo is also releasing the soundtracks for Looper and Music For 2001: A Space Odyssey, which will have a panel event at the convention.

Death Waltz brings a one-of-a-kind event and vinyl release to MondoCon to celebrate their new sub label ‘Originals’ which is going to focus on promoting and exposing brand new artists with a newly composed re-score of horror masterpiece The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, performed live with a screening of the film. Death Waltz will have a booth on the exhibition floor where attendees can meet Spencer Hickman to discuss the future of the two labels; they’ll also have the second ‘Originals’ release which will be revealed at the event.

3hhs_jag253full2Jagjaguwar and Death Waltz Recording Company are excited to announce that they are coreleasing the soundtrack to Panos Cosmatos’ Beyond The Black Rainbow on 9/2. This supposed “lost film” from the 1980s is inspired by obscure scifi movies and classic dystopian fiction. Created by Sinoia Caves, the ongoing project of Jeremy Schmidt a disciple of longform cosmic synthesizer soundscape, and member of Canadian psychandprog pioneersBlack Mountain the soundtrack draws on inspiration from Tangerine Dream, Wendy Carlos andJohn Carpenter. Schmidt artfully navigates the various sonic sensibilities of his predecessors, incoporating touchstones such as mellotron choirs, glacial analogue synthesizer pads and arpeggiators. The result is ominously beauitful, otherworldly and terrifying.

The Death Waltz Recording Company version is exclusive to Europe & housed inside a super glossy Stoughton tip on (Casebound) sleeve complete with an Obi strip and comes on smoked clear and red vinyl with sleevenotes From Jeremy Schmidt this is a recordcollector’s record.

Il Profumo Della Signora In Nero aka The Perfume Of The Lady In Black

score by Nicola Piovani

art by We Buy Your Kids

cat number rsddw006

Never before released score remastered from the original master tapes

Death Waltz Recording Company is proud to present another masterpiece from Italy, with Nicola Piovani’s gorgeous score to Francesco Barilli’s highly-regarded psychological horror IL PROFUMO DELLA SIGNORA IN NERO (a.k.a. THE PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK). The tale of a successful career woman who suffers a downward spiral into a treacherous mental breakdown, the film has been favourably compared in some quarters to Roman Polanski’s REPULSION, thanks to a star turn from leading lady Mimsy Farmer and Piovani’s beautiful yet unnerving music. The score is perhaps less telegraphing than you might expect – at least initially – with the core being a stunning melody that will remain in your head for months.

First performed in a classical style, the theme is reprised in many stylistic variations throughout the score, from a straightforward rendition that seems almost naively innocent, to lush pastoral reprisals, and even a big band version. Piovani uses the theme almost as a comfort zone, a false sense of security, before jarring the melody with piercing strings and harsh percussion to make you bolt upright. The score is haunting in places, with surreal melodies that almost sound like whalesong and a slow piano piece that perhaps had an influence on John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN. A mesmerising experience that remains a highlight of Italian film music.

Emanuelle Perche’ Violenza Alle Donne? aka The Violation Of Emanuelle

score by Nico Fidenco

art by We Buy Your Kids

cat number rsddw007

Remastered from the original master tapes

Never say that Death Waltz Recording Company doesn’t plumb the depths of exploitation (or in this case sexploitation) to bring you great music, with a treasure being unearthed in the shape of Nico Fidenco’s score to Joe D’Amato’s EMANUELLE PERCHE’ VIOLENZA ALLE DONNE (a.k.a. THE VIOLATION OF EMANUELLE). Regarded as the best of the unofficial “Black Emanuelle” series, D’Amato’s film starts off with the same sexual freedom and exploration as the official one but ends up descending into a hard-hitting voyage of human trafficking and sexual violence. Fidenco’s music as presented mostly represents the character’s exploration of hedonism and philosophy, scoring hook-ups with a truck driver and a couple of Italian girls, and as such is pretty free-flowing and upbeat.

The fantastic main theme is repeated throughout the album alongside some interesting supporting material, including some great offbeat percussion and some slinky melodies with a surprising amount of wind instruments, along with a subtle female voice. Synths appear frequently, along with the expected driving bassline, and it’s not until the end when it gets darker and sleazier, as well as funkier in an almost prog-rock way. It’s a fascinating end to a smooth-flowing record that reminds us that music to sex flicks sometimes needs more than just a wah-wah pedal.

1990 I Guerrieri Del Bronx aka The Bronx Warriors

score by Walter Rizzati

art by Jeremy Wheeler

cat number rsddw008

Remastered from the original master tapes

Travelling twenty-four years into the past in a beat-up DeLorean, Death Waltz Recording Company has returned from a post-apocalyptic wasteland to bring you the futuristic stylings of Walter Rizzati’s music to cult classic 1990: THE BRONX WARRIORS. Coming from the mind of celebrated shlock-meister Enzo G. Castellari, take John Carpenter’s ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, swap out the whole of NYC for just the Bronx, add in a little bit of THE WARRIORS and a lot of bikers and you have Castellari’s masterwork. The beauty of Rizzati’s score is that while it’s a tricked-out work of crazy genius for crazed biker gangs in a wasteland, it feels like a compilation of scores for movies that would only really play on the old 42nd Street.

It’s not easy to nail down what Rizzati’s chief weapon is; is it the electrifying guitar that wails out the main theme, the bassline that reaches eleven on the funkometer, or the Manzarek-esque plinking keyboards? Then there’s the thick percussion with the odd time-signatures, like a demonic version of The Dave Brubeck Quartet’s ‘Take Five’, or the out-of-nowhere piano/guitar rag. Or maybe it’s the big religioso number that sounds like it’s influenced by either Carl Orff or Fabio Frizzi. Either way, The Bronx in 1990 is the place to be. Just don’t forget your axe.

In The Wall

score by clint mansell

art by Jay Shaw

cat number rsddw009

Death Waltz Recording Company are extremely proud to present their first release by Grammy and Golden Globe nominated composer Clint Mansell (Requiem for a Dream, Moon, Noah), the score to the award-winning 2007 horror short IN THE WALL. Telling the surreal story of a man who accidentally kills his pregnant wife and hides her body in a cavity wall, only to be haunted by visions of her corpse escaping, the film deftly moves from psychological horror to creature feature propelled by Mansell’s intense music. The score is anchored by the main theme, a versatile string melody that moves from sinister to emotional to tragic to perfectly match the shocking events of the film.

As is characteristic of Mansell’s work  – the score for In The Wall expertly mixes the stripped-down string sound with electronic elements and percussion to create a vivid colour palette. The music plays with the conventions of the genre, at times Bernard Herrman-esque high strings pierce the silence, while intense electric guitar and feedback alternate with sparse, echoing drums. The electronics slowly undulate beneath the surface, winding up the tension and used more as a textural device until the final trip-hop rendition of the main theme takes your breath away.

A classic score from a truly brilliant composer.
